Rodgers brace lifts Santos

A brace from Eleazar Rodgers was enough to lift The People’s Team into the top five – for 24 hours at least – and leave The Students in fourth, six points off the pace in the League.

Rodgers gave the home side the lead on 15 minutes when he clipped home Bevan Fransch’s ball from the right to leave Moeneeb Josephs in the visiting goal no chance.

And the lanky striker almost made it 2-0 seven minutes later, but this time Josephs was equal to the task and saved his 18-yard effort.

Santos were unlucky once again on the half-hour mark as Tawonga Chimodzi’s blistering 30-yard drive crashed back off the crossbar and away to safety.

Ashraf Hendricks, so dangerous for Wits from set-pieces, should have done better just before halftime, but his header from the corner drifted just wide.

And Noah Chivuta forced a fine save from Wayne Roberts a few minutes later as the keeper tipped over his goal-bound shot.

Phil Evans had a shot blocked by Roberts just after halftime, before the visitors did find a leveling goal on 65 minutes as former Santos midfielder Marawaan Bantam headed home against his old club from Samuel Senokoane’s cross.

But Santos were back ahead with six minutes to play as Rodgers claimed his second, this time from a cross from the left by substitute Ricardo Skippers.

Dale Studzinski had a headed chance deep into injury time, but the Wits striker saw his effort saved by Roberts, while at the other end, Josephs did brilliantly to keep out the effort of Wayne Arendse.
