Speaking at the media launch of the 2007/08 Vodacom League national play-offs on Tuesday, Safa chairman of competitions, Mandla ‘Shoes’ Mazibuko said that he was pleased that the clubs had listened to reason to avoid going the court route the previous day, which would have not been in the interest of soccer.

“The communication sent to the Safa regions and then to the clubs earlier in the year stating that the runners-up in each of the nine regions would also be able to compete at the playoffs, was not an authorised Safa document and should never have been sent out by the national body,” said Mazibuko.

The clubs that finished top of the regional leagues and who will be in action at the play-offs in Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp from May 18-24, are Vasco da Gama (Western Cape), William Pescod (Northern Cape), Bush Bucks (Eastern Cape), Island FC (KwaZulu Natal), M Tigers (Gauteng), Carara Kicks (Free State) Classic (Limpopo), City of Matlosana (North West) and Barberton City Stars (Mpumalanga).

William Pescod were the runners-up in the 2000/01 season, while Vasco da Gama, under different ownership, clinched the title in the 2002/03 play-offs in Polokwane.

As hosts, the Southern District Municipality have committed around R10 million to ensure the successful staging of the event.
