South African midfielder Bongani Zungu has discussed his return from a lengthy injury lay-off as well as this afternoon’s clash against countryman Lebo Mothiba.
Zungu earlier this month made his first appearance in seven months following a knee injury picked up at the start of September last year.
The Bafana Bafana star has since managed two substitute appearances and started Amiens’ 2-3 defeat to Nantes last Sunday and declares that everything is going smoothly so far.
“I feel good and my confidence is growing. When a player comes back from a big injury, like I did, everything takes time,” Zungu tells snl24.com/kickoff.
“So, the coach gave me a few minutes against Saint Etienne and Dijon, and then I started the last game, so I’m growing in confidence and I’m much fitter.
“I gained a little bit of weight while I was out injured, but now I’m fit, and I feel good again.”
Zungu is set to come up against national teammate Lebogang Mothiba’s Strasbourg in a Ligue 1 clash at 15h00 (SA time) today, and is looking forward to a “healthy battle” after sharing in banter this past week.
“It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to playing against the guys. We actually talk about these games, and we’re all excited,” he says.
“I spoke to Mothiba the other day and he said he’s looking forward to scoring against us, but I wasn’t having it [laughs]. So, it should be a healthy battle.”
