Percy Tau climbs Bafana Bafana goalscoring chart after Sao Tome heroics

Percy Tau's goalscoring heroics against Sao Tome and Príncipe have seen him climb into the top 10 of Bafana Bafana's all-time leading goalscorers list.

Tau, 26, was in typically prolific form in front of goal during South Africa's Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Sao Tome and Príncipe this month, netting three goals across the two matches to ensure that Molefi Ntseki's side walked away with all six points on offer.

The Anderlecht star kicked off his and Bafana Bafana's international break with a well-taken penalty during the 2-0 win in Durban last week, before adding a brace in the national team's 4-2 come-from-behind victory on Monday evening.

Tau's strikes have propelled South Africa to within touching distance of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (to be held in 2022), and also saw him write his name into the country's history books after breaking into the top 10 for goals scored at international level.*

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has now netted 12 times in 29 appearances in the gold and green, overtaking Teko Modise (10 in 66) and drawing level with national team hero Siphiwe Tshabalala (12 in 89).

Benni McCarthy still holds the all-time record with 31 goals to his name and, while that target remains out of reach for Tau at the moment, he will have set his sights on overtaking Sibusiso Zuma and Tokelo Rantie (both 13) during the next international break.

The 2017/18 PSL Golden Boot winner will also be chasing another record in the new year when he could become South Africa's all-time leading goalscorer in AFCON qualifying, having climbed to second place on the all-time list following his latest exploits.

Tau has now scored seven goals in qualification for Bafana, drawing level with the late Philemon Masinga, and is just one goal behind the record of eight goals that has been held by Zuma since June 2007.
