The relegation of SV Meppen to the fourth-tier league of German football despite a spirited finish has prompted the club to make a call on Ernst Middendorp’s future at the club.
SVM have gone down as one of four teams that will play in the regional league next season after failing to find a way out of the relegation mud.

There had been hope that Middendorp would rescue the club from the drop when he was appointed in March, but the veteran coach’s attempts have been in vain.
They will play their last league game against Freiburg II on Saturday with little more than pride to play for, but SVM have confirmed that he has signed a new deal that will also have him doubling up as sports director.
"After being relegated to the third division, Ernst Middendorp remains the head coach of SV Meppen in the Regionalliga Nord.
"At the same time, the 64-year-old, who was born in Emsland, will take on the newly created position of sports director," reads a statement from the club.
Middendorp has now won five, lost five and drawn two at SVM.
"We are very happy that we can retain such a competent and experienced trainer in these positions in Ernst Middendorp.
"In the last few weeks, we have already seen very positive results from his meticulous and dedicated work," says SVM sports director Heiner Beckmann.
