Lebogang Moloto bags big award for Nashville in USA

The 28-year-old, who is only in his first season at the club after joining from USL rivals Swope Park Rangers, has been a key figure for the side, who are participating in America’s second-tier league for the first time, having only been founded in 2016.

Moloto has made 25 starts, with a further three substitute appearances, in the 33 games played so far this season, and boasts impressive numbers: his seven goals is joint-top at the club, and he has five assists to boot. The number 10’s passing success rate for the season sits at an impressive 81%, while he has won 44 fouls and had 27 shots on goal.

The fan-favourite also has an eye for the spectacular, with two goals scored from outside the box.

The South African’s contribution has not gone unnoticed, as he was duly awarded the Nashville Offensive Player of the Season award, which naturally left the midfielder well-pleased.

“I am thrilled to receive this prestigious award,” he tells snl24.com/kickoff from the USA. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates of course. I hope this is one of many more awards in the future.”

Nashville have one more regular league game of the season left, with a lot riding on Saturday’s home fixture against Eastern Conference table-toppers Cincinnati FC: only the top eight teams in the 16-club league progress to the play-offs, and although Nashville sit seventh, they’re only three points ahead of ninth-placed Ottawa Fury, and will thus need a win or a draw against the Conference leaders to guarantee a maiden play-off berth. The two sides drew 1-1 and 0-0 in their previous two meetings this season.

Upon the culmination of the season, Moloto will visit his home town Polokwane to host a one-day clinic named the Chebeng Cup for four Under-15 teams in his area.
