Pogon Szczecin bid farewell to Ricardo Nunes

Former Bafana Bafana defender Ricardo Nunes has parted ways with Pogon Szczecin, bringing his six-year affiliation with the Polish outfit to an end.

Earlier this month, Pogon spokesperson Krzysztof Ufland confirmed to KickOff.com that Nunes' contract had been extended until the end of the season after his previous deal expired in June.

He made his final appearance for Pogon on Wednesday last week during the club's final home match of the season and marked the occasion in typical fashion by recording the assist for Tomas Podstawski's match-winning goal against Piast Gliwice.

Following the match, an image of Nunes replaced the club's cover photo on Twitter and other social media pages, and a heartfelt message was posted on their website as a token of gratitude for his services over the past six years.

"Ricardo Nunes played for the last time in our colours at Twardowskiego," an official statement from the club read.

"We have had many great times together over the past six years. 'Rico' scored goals for us, assisted, defended access to our goal and became a favourite of the Szczecin stands."

The Johannesburg-born fullback, who made 153 appearances during his six-year stay with the club, was handed the captain's armband for the match against Piast Gliwice, and admitted that it was an emotional occasion for him to say farewell.

"Already then I was close to crying before the match, but I kept telling myself, 'Man, you can't cry before the meeting starts!'" Nunes told the club's website after the match.

"We fought and it worked. When I saw the change and realised that these were my last steps on this field, the last moments spent on it... Then tears appeared. To this came the words of farewell... It was difficult."
