For the first time this season, Zungu was named in Rangers' starting XI for a Scottish Premiership match and featured for an hour as the league leaders played out a 1-1 draw against Hamilton.
After the match, Gers boss Gerrard revealed his disappointment at his side's performance and shouldered the blame for over-rotating his squad against their relegation-threatened opponents.
"When we got [Ryan] Jack and [Steven] Davis on to the pitch with Kemar Roofe, we looked a lot more dangerous. We looked more like a Rangers team, but I need to take my share of the blame.
"I can't play Davis every single game, I can't play Jack every single game. I did that before and we had injuries. You try and make the right changes at the right time but, looking back, I got it wrong so the buck stops with me."
Zungu, who was replaced by the aforementioned Jack, and Cedric Itten were among those singled out for criticism following the match, but Gerrard refused to single the duo out for blame.
"It is hard to find positives, not just with Cedric or Zungu," the 40-year-old said. "They are the guys people look to as they were brought into the side. Outside of the subs and Allan McGregor, we need more.
"It wasn't acceptable as a group. We've got fans watching and we haven't given them a performance to be happy about."
