The Leone Stars are in Group 4 with Nigeria, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea.

“I know it’s a big challenge, but honestly we are in a group I prefer even though we are the underdogs,” Kanu said.

“Nigeria are no strangers to us and South Africa are not in their best shape at the moment. As for Equatorial Guinea, I don’t know anything about them but I don’t think they are a real threat to us.”

Sierra Leone survived a scare in their preliminary round tie against Guinea-Bissau, winning 1-0 at home and then forcing a 0-0 draw in Bissau in the second leg.

Kanu knows that the FA needs to put its house in order for the qualifying campaign to be positive.

"I think we just need to prepare well as a team and be disciplined. We have a chance,” said the optimistic coach.

Kanu will begin preparations for the World Cup qualifiers at the Amical Cabral sub-regional competition which begins in Guinea-Bissau on this weekend.
