Stadium strike set to continue

Hundreds of protesters, many carrying sticks, were barred from coming within 50 metres of the stadium entrance by riot police on Friday.

The Group Five-WBHO Consortium on Thursday obtained an interdict preventing them from entering the site where the 2010 stadium is being built.

This followed Thursday’s tense stand-off when security guards were chased by angry protesters.

The National Union of Mineworkers which represents about 20% of the 1 200 construction workers is demanding project bonuses of R1500 a month for each worker.

NUM is also demanding that workers be allowed to elect a full-time safety compliance worker.
