Fanyana Dhladhla, Sifiso Vilakazi and Moses Mbuyane scored for Ea Lla Koto, while Ashraf Hendricks netted for the Students.
The hosts made the brighter start, constantly attacking the Wits goal and Stars deservedly went ahead in the 17th minute when Dhladhla headed home from a cross by Moses Mbuyane.
The visitors almost drew level two minutes later when they were awarded a free-kick, with Phil Evans sending a superb ball into the area, but striker Dale Studzinski saw his goal-bound header blocked.
Stars almost doubled their lead on the half hour when Dhladhla latched onto a pass by Matome Madimabe, but the striker’s effort was well saved by BidVest Wits keeper Moeneeb Josephs.
Kinnah Phiri’s men continued pushing forward, with skipper Duncan Lechesa and Madimabe going close, before Mbuyane hit the crossbar with a superb free-kick from range.
Stars doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Sifiso Vilakazi fired home with a low shot following a cross by Siyabonga Mdluli.
The score remained 2-0 at half-time.
The Students started the second period in much better form and pulled a goal back in the 49th minute when Hendricks fired home from close range.
However, Free State Stars restored their two-goal cushion in the 71st minute when Mbuyane slotted home from the edge of the area following a pass by Sipho Nkosi.
The visitors pushed more men forward in a bid to get more goals, and they went close a minute from the end when substitute Esau Mtsweni headed just wide of goal from Almiro Lobo’s cross.
Stars almost made it 4-1 in the last minute of the game when Sfiso Sithole unleashed a fierce effort from range, but Wits’ skipper Josephs made a superb save, tipping the ball around the post, and the match ended with the hosts emerging deserved 3-1 victors.
