Stars triumph over Bay United

accreditation

Goals from Simba Marumo, Tshepo Ramokala and Phumudzo Manenzhe handed Miguel Gamondi's team three very welcome points after an inconsistent start to the 2008/09 campaign, while for United and coach Vladislav Heric there was to be no repeat performance of their last home match, when they famously defeated Orlando Pirates.

Gareth Ncaca had an early chance to repeat the heroics of his free-kick goal that dumped Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Telkom Knockout this past weekend, but this time his shot from the set piece was just over the crossbar.

Stars had the better of the first half, with Simba Marumo and Dingane Masanabo testing Arthur Bartman in the United goal, though the hosts had a few opportunities themselves, with David Twala, Macdonald Mukansi and Ncaca all shooting off target.

Stars found the breakthrough in the 41st minute, Marumo heading his side into the lead from a cross by Stanley Kgatla. The visitors took the narrow lead into the break.

After leading 1-0 at half time, the Tycoons looked confident after the resumption and duly doubled their lead in the 57th minute through midfielder Ramokala.

The second goal didn't break United's spirit, with Ncaca again looking dangerous in the 68th minute as the Eastern Cape side looked to get themselves back in contention.

However, a third goal from Stars in the 74th minute, this time from striker Manenzhe, confirmed the inevitable for the home side. Things could have gotten worse for Bay almost immediately after going 3-0 down, as Marumo missed two good chances to add to his tally for the night.

In the end it was a deserved victory for Stars, who will look to use this result as a springboard for the rest of the season.
