- The President of Mamelodi Sundowns – Mr. Patrice Motsepe referred the Board of Governors to a prior meeting which took place between himself, Irvin Khoza and Mr. Kaizer Motaung. The purpose of the meeting was to continue with their exploratory commercial discussions and to explore common positions on issues which were in the interests of football.
Everybody agreed that Mr. Patrice Motsepe would inform the Board of Governors of the issues that were discussed at the meeting.
At the Board of Governors meeting, Mr. Motsepe said he was particularly impressed by Dr. Khoza’s statement that “he was not perfect” and he encouraged every member to engage Dr. Khoza on issues where they may have different views.
Mr. Motsepe further stated he was not interested in any position in the Board of Governors and that his views where his personal suggestions and members were free to agree or disagree with his opinions.
In his view it would send a good message of unity and confidence in the leadership of football in South Africa particularly in the light of the 2010 Fifa World Cup if Dr. Khoza was considered to be nominated unopposed as Chairman of the PSL.
He further suggested that for the rest of the Exco positions members should vote for whomsoever they wanted to.
Mr. Motsepe also made an appeal that particularly Kaizer Motaung, Jomo Sono, Irvin Khoza and others be honoured and recognized for their contribution to South African Football. It is unfortunate that the sincere and honest intentions of Mr. Patrice Motsepe to find common positions and views amongst Club owners on issues which are in the interest of South African football has been deliberately misrepresented. It is that time of the year when elections are taking place and a lot of things will be said which are simply not true.
We have been approached as part of the lobbying that’s going on and whilst lobbying is proper and democratic; it seems to make sense to seek common positions on issues which build and develop football.
Mr. Motsepe also said that as club owners and participants in football we need each other. He also said that all of us must build trust and loyalty. None of us is more important or above the others.
