Supersport clinch first-ever title

Gavin Hunt’s side were outplayed by an excellent Celtic team, but will still be celebrating tonight as Ajax Cape Town, needing a win to overhaul Supersport, dramatically drew 2-2 with Golden Arrows in Durban, scoring two late goals to come from 2-0 down.

Moses Spandeel scored twice for Celtic, while Fikru Tefera netted for Supersport.

It was a nervous-looking Supersport in the opening few minutes, but by contrast, Celtic, free of pressure, were knocking the ball around nicely.

Hunt said after the game that it was the worst he had seen his side play in the opening 45 minutes, but they were still unlucky to go behind.

Spandeel beat the offside trap on 19 minutes and rounded Andre Arendse in the Matsatsantsa goal. His shot from 17-yards came back off the crossbar and bounced down, but appeared to be cleared.

However, the linesman ruled the ball had crossed the line, when replays clearly showed it had not.

That added more pressure on the visitors, who were almost rocked again when Arendse misjudged a backpass from Shane Poggenpoel, allowing it to bounce over his head, and had to rush back into his goal to clear off the line.

But it was 2-0 just before halftime as Petrus Mahlatsi teed-up the excellent Spandeel, who side-footed home from the edge of the area.

By his own admission, Hunt read his side the riot act at halftime, and Tefera went up bravely to head home on the hour-mark and pull his side back within one goal.

They couldn’t find a second, however, and had to wait anxiously on the result from Durban before they could start celebrating as the champions of South Africa for the 2007/08 season.
