SuperSport United vs Moroka Swallows PSL report

Goals from Edward Manqele and Siyabonga Nomvete either side of the half ended Matsatsantsa’s unbeaten start to the campaign.

Edwin Gyimah gave United hope of a comeback 17 minutes from time, but it was not to be.

Ronwen Williams was back in goal for the home side, while there were also starts for youngster Thabo Moloi, Sameegh Doutie, Mogogi Gabonamong and lanky forward Mame Niang. Edwin Gyimah, meanwhile, moved into defence alongside captain Bevan Fransman.

David Mathebula and Benett Chenene started from the onset for Matsatsantsa against their former employers.

Roger da Costa returned to the starting line-up for the Dube Birds, as well as Georgian midfielder Giorgi Nergadze. Edward Manqele yet again partnered veteran forward Siyabonga Nomvete in attack.

Swallows got off to the perfect start with on-loan Mamelodi Sundowns forward Manqele finding the back of the net in the eighth minute.

The Dube Birds striker picked up a ball from Lerato Chabangu inside the area before driving a low shot home for his fourth of the campaign.

SuperSport’s first chance fell to the feet of Chenene. Finding himself unmarked at the far post, he could only manage to direct David Mathebula’s inch-perfect cross wide.

Matsatsantsa failed to test Greg Etafia in a half dominated by the visitors. Lerato Chabangu was especially impressive in the middle of the park for the Dube Birds, while SuperSport’s midfield combination failed to unlock a stubborn Swallows defence.

Evergreen forward Nomvete doubled the visitors lead on the hour mark. The 35-year-old lost his marker before nodding Chabangu’s corner-kick into the back of the net at the near post to bag his first goal of the campaign.

Edwin Gyimah pulled one back for the hosts in the 73rd minute, rising highest to direct a powerful header past Etafia to set up a nervy final 17 minutes for the Birds.

Matsatsantsa desperately went in search of the equaliser, with Doutie, Thuso Phala and Niang going close.

SuperSport remain at the summit of the table despite suffering their first loss of the season.
