Swallows, Cosmos to play in Botswana tourney

Organisers of the Gaborone Challenge Cup have also scotched rumours that the tournament would not take place.

Addressing the media in Gaborone, chief organiser Fobby Radipotsane said the tourney would also include Botswana Mascom Premier League giants Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Extension Gunners.

“The tournament is on and everything is on schedule. We are excited to be hosting Swallows and Cosmos and this is good for our football as the Absa Premiership is among the top leagues in the world. We will learn a great deal from this competition,” Radipotsane added.

Radipotsane explained that Supersport United had pulled out competition after there were some problems with communication as another Matsatsantsa official had already agreed to a tournament in Maputo.

Local fans are expected to throng the stadium to see the likes of Anthony Laffor, Lefa Tsutsulupa, Bamuza Sono and Alfred Phiri strutting their stuff in Gaborone.

Centre Chiefs are currently top of the Botswana league after a run of 14 consecutive wins without a loss, while Gunners are currently battling relegation.

The organisers say there is no prize money for the competition except for the cup and medals for participants.

“We need to realize that time was a major constraint in us failing to get a sponsor, but we are sharing the gate takings. I think the most important thing is that all the teams need this tournament due to recess brought about by the Nations Cup in Ghana.

The tournament starts Friday night and continues on Saturday where the losers’ final will be followed by the final in the evening.
