Tico-Tico shuns Mambas after substitution

He has not returned for the build-up to the next Group Seven qualifier against Botswana in Maputo on Sunday, the government-run Noticias newspaper said on Friday.

Tico-Tico, who is Mozambique’s most capped player and record goalscorer, was taken off for the final 25 minutes of the 1-0 defeat by the Elephants.

The newspaper said he was also angry at being replaced as the designated penalty taker for the side, a decision taken by the Mambas’ Dutch coach Mart Noiij.

At a press conference in Maputo on Thursday, Nooij deflected questions about Tico-Tico, telling reporters he did not want to comment because “we are concentrating on the match against Botswana”.

Mozambique are looking for their first points of the campaign against the Zebras, who fired coach Colwyn Rowe earlier this week.

Their starting line-up against the Ivorians included midfielder Dominques (Elias Pelembe) of Supersport United and Miro from Wits University. Carlitos of Supersport United and Lamontville Golden Arrows striker Mauricio were on the bench.
