Gumede is seeking more regular game time after failing to command a regular place at Pirates since arriving in the club from Platinum Stars, making just three League starts for the Sea Robbers last season.
City have already invited another former Bucs player Lennox Bacela for a trial, with Gumede the next in line to re-unite with former coach Eric TInkler.
According to a source close to City, the club has already made an official offer to the Soweto giants for the services of the defender.
"Both clubs are talking,” the source reveals. “Gumede could be arriving down in Cape Town on Wednesday to finalise the deal with City.”
