Cape Town City sign Latvian international Renars Rode

“We would like to officially welcome Latvian international Renars Rode to Cape Town City FC,” read a statement released by the club.\

Rodes, who had been previously tracked by Mpumalanga Black Aces, having been invited for trials in January, was on the verge of signing for AmaZayoni in late May, and has now put pen to paper at City following John Comitis’ takeover of the Mpumalanga club.

Comitis revealed his delight in recruiting Rodes - who has signed a one-year deal with a further one-year option - insiting it is a sign of the type of team the club is building.

“I believe this proves that Cape Town City are sending out strong signals that we are here and we mean business,” he said.

“Signing a Latvian international is another way we are balancing out the team with different styles of football. We have the home Diski players as it was from Black Aces, then we’ve now added some youth from Cape Town and we mixing it with the Europeans’ experience.”

Rode has won four caps for Latvia having made his debut in 2013, and won the Virsliga in 2010 and 2014 in his homeland for Skonto FC and FK Ventspils.

The 27-year-old joins Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche and former Orlando Pirates defender Tshepo Gumede as City’s third signing in the space of a week.
