Jomo Sono – the owner of Mashumba’s previous club Jomo Cosmos – last month mentioned Chiefs as a possible destination for the 24-year-old after he struck seven goals and provided plenty assists as Ezenkosi went straight back to the First Division yet again.
With Chiefs in need of another forward after clearing house upfront from last season Mashumba stood as a viable option. However, he has just penned a three-year contract with Highlands.
“I am not really sure about that one (Chiefs interest). 'Bra J' would be in a better position to answer that question. We were all reading papers about rumours of all different kind of teams with Highlands Park even out of the picture. There were teams other than Highlands Park but I chose Highlands Park,” says Mashumba while noting that Sono was all the same disappointed to lose him.
“He (Sono) was disappointed but you know how the big man is, he is still promising to come back. So, that is part of football as you saw we lost in the last 10 minutes of the season so it was quite difficult for everyone in the team, even him also. But I am sure he understands that life goes on. I mean he took me when I was nothing much and he made me something, so I am really grateful for that,” he says.
At Highlands Mashumba will have to get going right away to enhance his chances of gate-crashing his way into the Zimbabwe national team squad heading to the AFCON finals early next year and keep his dream of playing in Europe alive.
“I signed a three-year deal with Highlands Park and we hope to stay in the PSL and to compete. On my side I am hoping to do well, score goals for the team which is why I am striker, I have to score goals. It (Europe) is a dream delayed rather than dream denied so I am sure something will come up. If I play well here I am sure I will go overseas. My main ambition remains to go forward with football and I still want to play for the national team as we have the AFCON finals coming up at the start of the new year and I would really want to be part of that squad,” says Mashumba.
