Mothibantwa had been without a job since resigning as assistant coach of then-NFD side Super Eagles in October last year.
"I am back to the Northern Cape," says the 34-year-old, who hails from Olifantshoek.
"I decided to come back home and plough back in to the community.
"We have assembled a great team with a lot of talented youngsters. Our main ambition is to get to the NFD next season.
"We have a very ambitious club owner who is working hard to make sure we realise that dream of competing in topflight football.
"With focus and determination I have no doubt we will achieve our goals this season."
Mothibantwa's men this weekend take on Kakamas Sundowns, the former club of Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Rivaldo Coetzee.
