Shongwe’s current deal with the Clever Boys expires at the end of June but Wits have an option on his contract to extend his stay, although any plans to exercise that option have yet to materialise.
Without a single Absa Premiership appearance this season, Shongwe has only tasted game time in the Nedbank Cup, playing a combined 62 minutes against Cape Town All Stars and Jomo Cosmos.
Despite his lack of first-team opportunities, the 27-year-old has a long list of known admirers quietly monitoring his situation at the Bidvest Stadium.
If Wits choose not to take up the option, as would reasonably be expected as the player is evidently not in their plans anymore, then Shongwe will walk away a free agent during the winter break, paving the way for a new chapter in his career.
Wits have so far given no indication about their plans regarding the creative left-footed midfielder, who joined the club from Mamelodi Sundowns three years ago.
