“It is unlikely that Onyango will be in goal against Angola on Saturday. The coach Lazslo Csaba reviewed the tape of the match and came to conclusion that goalkeeping was at fault for the team’s heavy defeat,” a source from Cotonou told snl24.com/kickoff’s representative in Uganda.
Uganda’s press rounded on Onyango this week, calling his performance in Cotonou “his worst game in national colours”.
He was “conceding goals from schoolboy errors,” said the Daily Monitor.
“The nation’s worst nightmare came true as goalkeeping errors and a lethargic performance conspired to allot Uganda a catastrophic 4-1 defeat,” added the New Vision newspaper.
The paper added that Onyango’s confidence looked “shot to pieces” after poor decision making, notably when to leave his line to deal with the aerial threats.
Csaba, who has also been criticised for playing Onyango despite a lack of first team football at Supersport United where he lost his first team place to Andre Arendse for the second half of the season, has already said that he will make changes for this weekend’s match against Angola.
“I don’t want to talk much about the match. We took the lead but made childish errors and let in two quick goals.
“Now the focus is on Angola which we need to beat. We are going to make some changes. I expect Ibrahim Sekagya, Noah Kasule and Geoffrey Massa to play,” Csaba said after the team’s training onTuesday.
Pressure is mounting on the Hungarian-born coach to quit after the team crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Benin.
The defeat was the heaviest suffered by Cranes since 4-0 rout by DR Congo inspired by Shabani Nonda on June 5 2005, in qualifiers for Egypt 2006.
Cranes took a surprise lead against Benin after only eight minutes through Eugene Sseppuuya.
But everything changed five minutes later when Razack Omontoyossi equalized. Two minutes later skipper Omar Tchomogo scored the second goal.
In the 69th minute, Stephane Sessegnon netted the third and Razack Omontoyossi headed the ball in the net for his second and fourth goal for his team four minutes from time.
“The players lacked ambitions and we made so many childish mistakes,” was all Csaba could say after the match.
David Obua of Kaizer Chiefs and the Bloemfontein Celtic defender Timothy Batabaire also played in the 4-1 defeat.
