Winning start for South African Under-17 side in Mauritius

The national Under-17 side, coached by Molefi Ntseki, began their long journey towards the World Cup with victory over Seychelles in their opening match of the COSAFA Under-17 Championships being played in Mauritius.

Despite the scoreline it was a dominant performance from a totally new squad of players, featuring none of the stars that went to the Under-17 World Cup in Chile last year.

There were stand-out performances from Ikapa Sporting attacking midfielder Luke le Roux, who has already had two training stints at Dutch side PEC Zwolle and is likely to return again when he turns 18, as well as Mamelodi Sundowns forward Siphamandla Ntuli.

Sundowns teammate Glen Baatjies and Tyreese Pillay from Pimville Young Stars also put in strong showings.

Next up for Amajimbos is a meeting with Namibia on Monday, with the Young Brave Warriors having defeated hosts Mauritius 3-1 in their opener.

The victor in this match will be virtually assured of a semifinal place, with the South Africans playing their final group game on Wednesday against Mauritius.

The final will be played on Sunday, with Ntseki’s side taking on Tanzania in the first leg of their African Under-17 Championships qualifier the following weekend.
