Zamalek fail to pitch for Cairo Derby as Al Ahly handed three points in chaotic events

Al Ahly maintained their perfect record in the Egyptian Premier League without kicking a ball against Zamalek in the Cairo Derby on Monday evening.

After incredible scenes at a sold-out Egyptian Super Cup last week in which Zamalek lifted their third trophy of the season, what unfolded this week has been nothing short of comical.

Ugly scenes marred the end of the fierce rivalry as fights broke out between players and management after the penalty shootout, which the Egyptian Football Association duly punished.

Red Devils star Mahmoud Kahraba and Zamalek’s Emam Ashour were handed bans until the end of the season, while several other players were sanctioned for the unsavoury scenes.

Both clubs were also fined EGP 100 000 (R97 000) for failing to control their players after while the White Knights controversial President Mortada Mansour was also punished.

Confusion in Cairo Derby build-up

After Mansour initially declared that Zamalek would refuse to play the Cairo Derby this week, it was later confirmed that Patrice Carteron's side would field a U-18 side in protest of the league scheduling and punishment handed down by the EFA.

However, hours before the game it's been claimed that Mansour forced delays on the departure of team bus under rainy weather conditions and suggested that the weather was the cause of the delay.

But the EFA confirmed that the traffic jam was expected during the adverse conditions and a police convoy was provided for both side's to reach the Cairo International Stadium on schedule.

Lithuanian referee Gediminas Mazeika initially decided to postpone the game by one hour after the claims made by Zamalek while Al Ahly players were ready for kickoff on the field of play.

But after 30 minutes, with no indication that the opposition was en-route, the points were rewarded to Rene Weiler's side by default with a 2-0 scoreline.

Ahly will now prepare to host Mamelodi Sundowns in the first Champions League quarter-final on Saturday, while Carteron's side host reigning champions Esperance on Friday.
