Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that he has held talks with legendary ex-Gunners boss Arsene Wenger over a possible return to the Emirates.

Wenger, now FIFA's chief of global football development, could be set for a return to his old club, albeit in a different role after spending 22 years as manager of Arsenal before his exit in 2018.

With the Frenchman being the English club's most successful manager ever with three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, and seven FA Community Shields, Arteta has now confirmed that a potential homecoming may be on the cards.

"Well, we have been in communication," the Spanish tactician said when asked if an offer had been made to Wenger to return, per Goal.

"I saw him and I talked to him when we went to see the film (Arsene Wenger: Invincible) and it was incredibly pleasant to chat to him and hopefully we can bring him close.

"I think he would have a great time just seeing the environment he can create around him when he is around this place because of the respect, admiration, and the love that everybody at the club has for what he has done and as well for what he represents as a person in this club."

The Spaniard was also asked about the role the Frenchman could play at the north London club.

"I cannot tell you now," Arteta responded.

"But what I can say is I would like him to be much closer personally to me because I think it would be a great help, it would be a great help for the club.

"Things take time and I think he has to dictate those timings.

"What I can say from my side, and I think on behalf of everybody, is that we would be delighted to have him much closer."
