With the unprecedented spread of the coronavirus, football has taken precautions for the safety of players and staff on and off the field.

To date, COVID-19 has killed over 3 300 people, while infecting over 98 000 people worldwide.

And as the virus is contagious through human contact, most European leagues have now suspended pre-match handshakes, hi-fives, and hugs.

According to BBC Sport, "Coronavirus is spread via droplets from the nose and mouth and can be transmitted onto the hands and passed on via a handshake."

Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United have banned handshakes during training sessions. The Scottish Football Association also banned all pre- and post-match handshakes, according to Fox Sports.

In Germany, Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have also taken action by banning all players and staff members from posing for photos and signing autographs.

The Spanish Football Federation also passed a ruling saying that any match involving a Spanish and Italian side will be played behind closed doors, including Valencia’s second leg UEFA Champions League tie against Atalanta.
