A new Arsenal star has surprisingly been likened to Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo following his impressive start for Mikel Arteta's side.

Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu joined the Gunners from Bologna for £16 million (R324 million) on the latest transfer window's deadline day, and has already impressed in the three games he has played for his new club.

His former sporting director at Belgian side Sint-Truiden, Andre Pinto, has now claimed that the 24-capped Japan international – who can play in central defence, at right-back and as a defensive midfielder – has a mentality similar to that of Ronaldo.

"What is amazing about Tomi is that he doesn't accept anything that isn't success," Pinto told Goal.

"He's not lucky, nothing for Tomi comes because he's lucky. He's just a hard-working player.

"You find a lot of dedicated players, but Tomi has a little bit of the Cristiano Ronaldo mentality in terms of determination, in terms of working hard, and in terms of eating healthy.

"He is the type of player who is never satisfied. He will always continue to work hard to keep developing himself."

Earlier this week, the 22-year-old explained why he decided to sign for the Premier League side.

"For me, Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so there is no reason at all to say no to them," Tomiyasu told the Gunners' official matchday programme.

"It's as simple as that – when I had the offer, I just wanted to be part of Arsenal.

"I wanted to play at a higher level, so I am so grateful to be given this chance by Arsenal. Just could not believe it when I found out.

"I was very excited as soon as I knew. I didn't need to call anyone or speak to anyone for advice. It was an easy choice for me, because, well, because it's Arsenal.

"I didn't even have time to speak to the manager before signing the contract, and I didn't need to. I wanted to come."
