An injury-hit Spurs thought to have fallen behind after a cross from Mohamed Salah was side-foot in the corner by Robert Firmino, but the assistant referee correctly ruled for offside in the opening seconds.

The Londoners soon settled down and began finding a few openings, but were still struggling to find their chance of the game.

A miscommunication at the back opened the way for Salah to run through to take a left-foot shot at Vorm, who stood firm to make the save.

Danish international Christian Eriksen took a free-kick on the edge of the box, but it fell nicely into the arms of a starring Alisson Becker after 28 minutes.

In Sadio Mane, the Reds looked content going on the break and the former nearly profited after drifting at Jan Vertonghen before drawing an easy save from Vorm.

The Merseyside club went ahead thanks to Giorgi Wijnaldum rising high to head in a corner at the back post with the help of Goal-line technology after the best efforts of a certain Vorm.

The Dutchman exposed space in the Spurs defence to connect with a side-dink from Salah near the byline, and after drifting wide tried a cut back and shot wide.

Both sides returned unchanged for the second half, with Tottenham eager to stage a come back to avoid successive defeats.

Liverpool continued pressing ahead after Salah intercepted in the middle to play in Mane, whose shot on the turn forced Vorm to punch clear on 49 minutes.

Through the industrialist character of Lucas Moura, the home side created a big chance drawing level but after cutting back, the Brazilian glided wide.

The league leaders made it two after 54 minutes with Firmino making no mistake with an easy tap-in after poor defending.

It looked it was about to get worse for Spurs but the exploits of Vorm prevented Naby Keita from adding to the scoreboard.

Spurs first change happened at the midway point, with Erik Lamela replacing Moussa Dembele with Hueng-Min Son replacing Harry Winks late on.

Liverpool’s first change happened on 73 minutes, with Jordan Henderson replacing the second goal-scorer Firmino.

Spurs were left wanting, but ended off with a consolation strike with a late effort from Lamela as Liverpool marched on.
