Erik ten Hag closes in on first Manchester United signing

Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for their first signing under Erik ten Hag's reign.

The Red Devils have endured a tumultuous 2021/22 campaign, and with a potential seventh-place finish on the cards, this would equal their worst Premier League finish since the 2013/14 season.

The struggles on the pitch has led to various reports suggesting that an overhaul could potentially take place in the next window, with a number of changes already taking place in the coaching, scouting and transfer departments.

With more than eight players tipped to part ways with the Manchester club, the Ajax Amsterdam boss has seemingly already set his sights on incomings, with a central midfielder believed to be a priority.

According to Spain-based journalist Gerard Romero, United are on the verge of an agreement with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong, who worked with Ten Hag at the Eredivisie giants.

It is said that, because of their tight financial situation, the LaLiga giants may need to sell a big name or two, and some believe the Dutchman is not part of Xavi Hernandez's long-term plans at the Nou Camp, although the Spanish tactician has previously insisted the player has an important role to play for him.

It is claimed the prospective deal could cost the Red Devils in the region of £69 million (R1.3 billion), which is just short of the £74 million (R1.4 billion) Barca paid to sign him from Ajax in 2019.

While Romero has claimed there is a "95%" chance of the midfielder moving to Old Trafford, the deal could be thwarted if De Jong decides he wants to stay at his current club.
