Manchester City star set for shock exit?

A certain Manchester City star has reportedly been told by the club's hierarchy he can leave the Etihad in the upcoming transfer window.

A number of the Citizens' players, including Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, have been linked with exits recently, with the fight for regular first-team football at the club appearing to be a common theme for their desire to depart.

Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan appears to be the latest player who could seek greener pastures after the Premier League log leaders reportedly told him he can leave, according to the Daily Mail.

The Germany international, who has one year left on his current contract, is said to be open to the idea too as he is understood to want to feature in the starting XI on a more consistent basis after starting just 20 EPL matches out of 37 in this campaign.

Gundogan – who was Pep Guardiola's first signing for the club in 2016 – was a vital cog in City's league title-winning 2020/21 season, during which he made history as the first City player ever to win back-to-back EPL player of the month awards in January and February 2021.

The 31-year-old may have expected to see an increase in first-team action this season as a result, but this has not been the case, with the player reportedly feeling he is at a point in his career where he should be starting every week.

Recent reports have suggested that the Citizens have entered the race to sign FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, which may explain why the Manchester club is willing to part ways with Gundogan.
