'Manchester United chief Ed Woodward signed Cristiano Ronaldo in my garden'

A former England star and famed broadcaster has revealed some inside details about how Cristiano Ronaldo sealed his return to Manchester United.

The Portugal captain made a remarkable return to Old Trafford during the latest transfer window after various reports had linked him with a switch to United's crosstown rivals Manchester City instead.

City had just lost out on signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, and it seemed likely that they had the capacity to bring in Ronaldo.

However, it later emerged that the Red Devils were, in fact, frontrunners to re-sign their former talisman, who had left the club for Real Madrid 12 years prior.

According to the Daily Mail, a £19.8 million (R407 million) deal was struck between United and Italian giants Juventus, which ensured that Ronaldo's return was sealed, and former Three Lions attacker Gary Lineker has now seemingly revealed how the deal went down.

"I'll put my cards on the table, [United executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward is a good friend of mine and lives next door," Lineker explained on the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast.

"He signed Cristiano Ronaldo when he was in my garden! When he walked in, he was on the phone to Jorge Mendes, I hope I'm not giving too much away!

"I have a fantastic picture of him sat on the phone to him, which I might share one day with his permission."

Having sealed his return to the Theatre of Dreams, Ronaldo has already netted five goals in six appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils this season.
