Ferdinand, 40, spent 12 years at the Premier League giants where he made 455 appearances, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two EFL Cups.
According to SkySports News, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met with Ferdinand over the sporting director position and wants to finalise an appointment before the start of next season.
The person who fills the newly-created sporting director role is expected to focus on the transfer market, the academy and supporting the management team.
It's been suggested that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appointed on a permanent basis in March is willing to work with a sporting director and has been involved in discussions regarding the recruitment.
