A controversial claim Manchester United's new boss Ralf Rangnick made about Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016 has recently gone viral, with the pair set to work together in the near future.

The German coach is reportedly set to take his first United training session after his side's clash with Arsenal on Thursday night, with the club still working on acquiring his work permit.

Since Rangnick was confirmed as the Red Devils' new head coach, there has been a wave of speculation as to what this could mean for Ronaldo – the manager has been dubbed by many to be "the godfather of gegenpressing", which consists of intense pressing of the opposition, while the Portuguese forward appears to prefer to preserve his energy in the latter stages of his career.

This sentiment was amplified after a comment Rangnick made in 2016 resurfaced recently. While the 63-year-old was employed by RB Leipzig, he was asked by a journalist if he would like to sign Lionel Messi or Ronaldo.

"No," he answered, per Dream Team.

"We have a wage cap and they are too old. We have our own philosophy and it wouldn't work."

This statement took place when the Portuguese forward was only 31 years old, and with him now being five years older, this comment could be of concern to Ronaldo as a decline in his game time could be on the cards.
