Manchester United stars have been accused of "throwing in the towel" during their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday evening.

The Red Devils suffered a massive blow in their bid to finish in the top four as Pep Guardiola’s side secured an emphatic win over them at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice in the Manchester derby, with Jadon Sancho also finding the back of the net against his boyhood club.

This win meant that Arsenal stayed in the fourth position with three games in hand while City extended their lead at the top of the table to six points.

Ralf Rangnick’s team were heavily criticised during the loss but particularly for their second-half showing during which they only managed 21% possession and did not have a shot.

In a post-match analysis segment on Sky Sports, United legend Gary Neville lambasted the performance from his former side.

“Manchester United’s response to going 3-1 down has been embarrassing,” Neville said on co-commentary.

“Ninety-two percent possession for City? They have given up.

“They are walking around the pitch. It’s nowhere near good enough.

“As a Manchester United fan, it’s embarrassing.

“The effort and intensity from United in the last 20 minutes were non-existent.

“The scoreline isn’t the problem. It’s the response to going 3-1 down that’s the problem. They have thrown the towel in.”
