Premier League match report Aston Villa v Manchester United 15 January 2022

Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, with Philippe Coutinho making a big impact on his return to the Premier League.

Ralf Rangnick had to once again do without Cristiano Ronaldo with Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay suspended as Villa featured new signing Lucas Digne with Philippe Coutinho on the bench.

The Red Devils experienced a bright start six minutes gone when a rasping shot through a crowded six-yard area by Bruno Fernandes fizzled through the gloves of Emiliano Martinez.

Villa’s shot-stopper redeemed himself minutes later as he produced a fine block to keep Mason Greenwood’s half-volley from a loose ball in the area out of reach.

All wasn’t lost for the charges of Steven Gerrard which had United goalkeeper David De Gea pull out a point-blank save to parry Emi Buendia’s first-time header after the half-hour mark.

The Red Devils were issued more threats late in the half from a first-time volley at the back-post of the area by Digne, which De Gea repelled.

Here are the highest-paid players in the Premier League this season:

Villa made a substitution at the start of the second half as Kortney Hause replaced Ezri Konsa, while Jacob Ramsey cut into the area to have De Gea at full stretch at the near post.

Although, United made it two on 67 minutes after Fernandes collected a pass from Fred to display a clever and composed finish as the host introduced Coutinho for his debut.

The Brazilian, who has joined on-loan from FC Barcelona, urged the Clarets on and with 77 minutes played Ramsey halved the advantage through a stern finish from Coutinho’s ball.

Coutinho spoiled United’s party five minutes later when he attacked a cutback from Ramsey to finish from close-range following a clever run in.

The Red Devils looked to reclaim the lead in the dying minutes from a corner, but the host held on tight and bagged a point.
