Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea 'edge closer' to next signing Jules Kounde

Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea are understood to be edging ever closer to signing one of their key targets for this transfer window, Sevilla and France star Jules Kounde.

Yet another French defender may be heading to the Premier League following Raphael Varane's confirmed move to Manchester United, and this time it is widely-coveted 22-year-old centre-back Kounde, who has reportedly snubbed Tottenham Hotspur in favour of their London rivals.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the young defender is a priority signing for the Blues, and the player is believed to share the same sentiment, with the potential deal set to progress this week.

"Chelsea are really pushing for Jules Kounde. Tottenham [Hotspur] wanted the player and they had an agreement with Sevilla but the player wants to play Champions League football, and that is why now Chelsea are absolutely leading the race," Romano told Sky Sports.

"The player has an agreement on personal terms with Chelsea, so it is just a matter of days before we understand if Sevilla will accept the proposal from Chelsea.

"They [Chelsea] offered around €30 to 35 million (R513 to R598 million) and Kurt Zouma as part of the deal. Sevilla wants more than this, around €45 million (R770 million) and Kurt Zouma.

"We will see if they can find an agreement with Kurt Zouma or without a player and just including money.

"They are negotiating on this and a centre-back is a priority for Chelsea. I think they will try again this week because Kounde also wants to join Chelsea."
