Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has hit out at the people doubting Mohamed Salah, who opened the new season with a hat-trick on Saturday.

Salah was key in the Reds' Premier League success last season, but was overlooked for a number of individual awards while he was not named in the PFA Team of the Season.

The Egyptian responded with a hat-trick on Saturday evening as the Reds began the new season with a 3-2 win over newly promoted Leeds United.

Van Dijk, who bagged the Reds' second goal, says the media has always doubted the two-time Golden Boot winner.

"Well that's the media, you guys, doubting him. Obviously, we appreciate him and that's the most important thing for him as well," Van Dijk told beIN Sports post-match.

"We don't see the negative parts of what the media says."

The Dutchman also made an unusual error that led to Leeds' second goal in the first half.

"It was one of those situations that can happen. I tried my best, that's what I did and unfortunately a goal came out of it but I don't worry about it," he added.
