Spain suffered a first defeat in their 2024 European Championship qualifying campaign after going down 2-0 to Scotland on Tuesday night.
Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Rodri Hernandez and Mikel Merino remained the sole survivors from Spain’s victory over Norway in their group opener last weekend.
Scotland hit the breakthrough on seven minutes when Andrew Robertson capitalised on a slip by Pedro Porro and cutback for Scott McTominay to fire into the bottom-corner.
La Roja piled up the numbers in desperate pursuit to go level minutes apart and had a header from Joselu in the area clipped off the top of the woodwork.
More trouble were put forward by the 2010 world champions where Porro brought a low pass under control and stung goalkeeper Angus Gunn's gloves before Rodri Hernandez nodded over following a corner.
The visitors responded with a double change at the break, with Dani Carvajal replacing Porro before Mikel Oyarzabal made way for Nico Williams.
Spain trailed again five minutes in the second half when McTominay made a late run into the area and fired in on the half-volley from close-range following a loose ball.
La Roja now had their backs against the wall and needed a way back, but the host continued to charge forward at lighting pace and piled the defensive-third in search of more goals.
As Spain enjoyed a lot of the possession, the three-time European champions though struggled to create clear-cut chances and in the end suffered a shock defeat at Hampden Park.
