Newport County goalkeeper Tom King has claimed a Guinness World Record after scoring the longest-ever recorded goal in football's history.

The Guinness World Records (GWR)have honoured Newport shot-stopper King with the record for the longest-ever goal scored following the 25-year-old's 96.01m strike during his club's 1-1 draw with Cheltenham Town on Tuesday.

"With his epic downfield kick, King officially broke the record for the longest goal scored in a competitive football match, which covered an incredible distance of 96.01 m (105 yds)," GWR said in an official statement.

"Booting the ball from his own six-yard box, it was picked up by the wind and soared into the net just out of opposition goalkeeper Joshua Griffiths' reach."

The record was previously held by former Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who found the back of the net from 91.9m (100.50 yds) out during a Premier League clash against Southampton on 2 November 2013.
