The Paris Saint-Germain attacker has now won his first Ballon d'Or as a non-Barcelona player, having walked away with the award after beating Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski to the prize by just 33 points.

The Albiceleste captain received 613 votes, while the Polish striker finished second with 580 votes, with Chelsea's Jorginho taking third spot with 460 points to his name.
Going into the ceremony, Messi and Lewandowski were widely considered the frontrunners for the award following a stellar 2021 to date, but after the former was handed the prestigious accolade, he had a special message for the former Borussia Dortmund striker, per Goal.

"I'd like to mention Robert [Lewandowski], it's been a real honour to compete with him," Messi said during his acceptance speech, per Goal.
"I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d'Or, you deserved it."
