In pictures: Maradona statue unveiled in Napoli


On Sunday, Italian giants Napoli unveiled a new statue in honour of their late club legend Diego Maradona outside their stadium. Here are the best images! 

The 1986 FIFA World Cup winner is widely considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time, and his untimely death on 25 November 2020 sent shockwaves across the footballing community, particularly in Naples, where he is considered by most to be an icon. 

As such, Napoli paid a special tribute to their former great ahead of their Serie A match against Lazio on Sunday, two days after the one-year anniversary of his sad passing.

The new statue was presented just outside Napoli's home ground, the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, and the Serie A side capped off a special night with an emphatic 4-0 win over Lazio. 

The scuplture was not the club's only gesture to their legend, having also recently released special commemorative shirts with Maradona's face on it,  as can be seen in the gallery above.

The ex-Albiceleste star won two Serie A titles, an Italian Cup, and a UEFA Cup, among other accolades, during his seven-year stay at Napoli.

Rather unfortunately, Maradona is among some of the best footballers in the game to never win a Ballon d'Or.
