Real Madrid picked up their first win of the season in LaLiga following an entertaining 3-2 win over Real Betis on Saturday evening.
Zinedine Zidane surprised many after giving Luka Jovic a start up front, while Casemiro returned in midfield along with Federico Valverde with Luka Modric on the bench.
Betis, who came into the game with two wins on the trot, conceded their first goal of the season on 14 minutes when Valverde applied a composed finish off Karim Benzema’s spade work.
It should’ve been two within a minute after Sergio Ramos volleyed an inviting chance following a probing delivery near the area wide of the post.
Betis were level ten minutes to halftime when Aissa Mandi reacted to Sergio Canales’ teasing delivery to the back-post to head beyond Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Los Blancos succumbed to a second on 37 minutes after William Carvalho collected Nabil Fekir’s surging pass before rattling the bottom corner from point-blank range.
Zidane instituted a change on the stroke of halftime as Modric replaced Toni Kroos, who had seemingly picked up a hamstring injury.
Los Blancos came out for the second half energised, and levelled two minutes in after Emerson turned Dani Carvajal’s cross aimed for Benzema past his own goalkeeper Joel Robles.
The hosts finished the match with ten players on 67 minutes as Emerson was given his marching orders after bringing down Jovic following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Madrid regained the lead with eight minutes to go after Ramos cheekily beat Robles from the penalty spot after former FC Barcelona defender Marc Batra was flagged for handling in the area.
Los Blancos successfully ran down the latter minutes of the match to register their first win of the campaign while handing Betis their first defeat in the process.
