Mariano Diaz and Jose Vallejo were on target to lead Real Madrid to a 3-2 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Following a poor run of form, Los Blancos handed starts to Mariano, Brahim Diaz, Federico Valverde, Jose Vallejo and Thiabaut Courtois among others.

Real raced into a second minute lead after Mariano seized misplaced possession from Santi Cazorla to slot past Andres Fernandez.

Villarreal levelled 11 minutes later after Gerard Moreno drifted close to the penalty area to fire past Courtois.

In quick succession, Real nearly re-established their lead on 15 minutes but Dani Carvajal was kept out by the post after firing from distance.

Villarreal provided a big scare on 32 minutes after Moreno flicked a header towards Samuel Chukwueze, whose shot forced Courtois to dive to the right for a save.

Real were back in front on 40 minutes after Vallejo reacted sharply to Marcelo’s rebounded attempt for a comfortable finish.

Real tripled their tally shortly after the break after Mariano rounded off a brilliant move by Casemiro and Carvajal with an easy tap-in.

A fourth beckoned on 58 minutes, but an outstretched leg from Fernandez pushed Vallejo’s shot away.

Fernandez remained busy 65 minutes in after pushing Marcelo’s low shot from the right side to safety.

Real made their first change in the 74th minute, as Brazilian international Vinicus Junior replaced Brahim.

Courtois denied the Yellow Submarine with a one-handed stop on 81 minutes following a low curler from Moreno.

The consolation arrived late into time added on after Jaume Costa smacked home a loose ball to round off the match, as Real return to winning ways.
