Lionel Messi responds to Cristiano Ronaldo challenge to leave FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo, who challenged him to leave his comfort zone and test himself outside of LaLiga.

Messi, 32, who has spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, extended his Golden Shoe record over Ronaldo this week after receiving the prestigious honour for his exploits of the 2018/19 season.

And after the ceremony, the Argentine superstar was pressed about Ronaldo's statement to La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year - in which he suggested he should seek a new challenge.

Ronaldo, who netted his 700th career goal for club and country this week, has played in four different leagues since graduating from the Sporting Lisbon academy.

However, Messi states he is able to challenge himself each season, without having to leave 'the best club in world'.

"Everyone looks for their targets and their experiences," Messi told Marca.

"I never had the need to leave the best club in the world, that Barcelona are, and where I enjoy training, games and the city.

"[The city to club dynamic] is very complete and I was always sure about the targets at this club [rather than going to] look for it elsewhere."

Messi has scored 604 goals and registered 244 assists in 692 games for the Blaugrana since making his first-team debut in 2004.
