Marcelo makes Real Madrid history

accreditation

Real Madrid star Marcelo reached a massive milestone in the club's history as they claimed the Spanish Super Cup title on Sunday night.

Carlo Ancelotti's men clinched their first title of the season after securing a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, with Luka Modric and Karim Benzema's goals proving the difference in the decider.

With the tie almost over, Marcelo was brought on in the final minutes in a touching gesture that allowed the Brazilian to equal Paco Gento's record of 23 trophies as a Real player, the most by anyone in the club's long history.

The 33-year-old left-back has thus surpassed Sergio Ramos, who won 22 titles with Los Blancos, while Benzema is just behind the Spaniard with 20 trophies.

The LaLiga giants are currently top of the Spanish top-flight table – ahead of second-placed by Sevilla by five points – and if they continue their fine form, Marcelo will become the club's most decorated player in its history this season.

After the final, Real president Florentino Perez, who cut a happy figure as his team secured their 12th Spanish Super Cup, spoke of his joy for the Brazilian.

"Marcelo is a legend," Perez said, per Marca.

"For him to receive an ovation is obvious, and I'm happy he received it in a place with so many Madridistas."
