Real Madrid: Zinedine Zidane hits out at referee over penalty decision

A furious Zinedine Zidane hit out at the match referees after Real Madrid's LaLiga title hopes suffered a major blow on Sunday.

With title rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona having played out to a draw earlier in the weekend, Real Madrid found themselves in a great position to capitalise on the situation when they met fellow contenders Sevilla on Sunday.

However, things did not go entirely to plan for Zidane's side, who needed a last-gasp goal from Eden Hazard to earn a 2-2 draw against the Andalusians at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, having trailed to goals from Fernando and an Ivan Rakitic penalty.

Rakitic's strike came in controversial fashion after Karim Benzema won a penalty for Real only for the video assistant referee to pull play back and award Sevilla a penalty at the other end after spotting a handball by Eder Militao in the build-up.

Here's how the battle for the LaLiga title currently stands

1. Atletico Madrid 35 23 8 4 61 22 39 77
2. Real Madrid 35 22 9 4 60 26 34 75
3. Barcelona 35 23 6 6 80 33 47 75
4. Sevilla 35 22 5 8 51 29 22 71

Zidane was visibly incensed by the decision and, after being seen having a discussion with the referee on the pitch, held little back in his criticism of the officials during a post-match press conference

"What they have told me has not convinced me," he told Movistar. "I'm very angry. "I spoke to the referee to look for an explanation. It's really complicated because we deserved much more but it is what it is.

"... I don't understand anything from the referee. If there is a Militao handball, it is Sevilla handball as well. I am not convinced by what he told me. I never speak about referees, but today I am angry.

"Don't ask me any more about this, I've already said what I think. They have to explain the handball rules to me and that's it. We're going to fight until the end. Until the death."
