Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman says it's hard to understand that Lionel Messi will not be returning to the club.

The Catalan giants surprised the football world on Thursday after announcing that the Argentine superstar will not be returning to the club.

The club's financial struggles means they cannot afford to re-sign the six-time Ballon d'Or eventhough he was at the Camp Nou on Thursday to sign the new deal.

Koeman took to social media to bid farewell to his former captain, who is also set to speak at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

“Still hard to understand that you will not play for FC Barcelona anymore," Koeman tweeted.

“Thanks for everything you have done for our club Leo. I really enjoyed the full season we worked together.

“I am impressed with your work ethic and desire to win. It makes you the best player in the world. For now, I wish you and your family the best!”
