Louis Van Gaal urges Dutch star to reject Manchester United

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has discouraged one of his national team stars from joining his former club Manchester United.

The Red Devils are expected to bring in a few new signings in the upcoming transfer window, and among those linked with a switch to Old Trafford is Ajax Amsterdam's Jurrien Timber.

The centre-back, who is currently on national team duty with the Netherlands, is reportedly on new United manager Erik ten Hag's list of targets ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, with talks between the player and the club understood to be ongoing.

However, although some are hopeful the transfer will be completed given that Ten Hag gave the highly-rated defender his Eredivisie debut in 2020, Van Gaal is not convinced the 20-year-old joining the Red Devils is a good idea.

"I think a player of his quality can play in the Premier League. That is not a problem," the 70-year-old said in a press conference ahead of the Netherlands' UEFA Nations League clash against Wales on Wednesday night, according to Goal.

"If he has to make this big step now, that's the question... it is not so wise I think (to join Manchester United). He has to play."

Meanwhile, former Ajax Cape Town and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Marciano Vink thinks the move would be ideal for both parties.

"In defence, they need to reinforce and Timber is being named as one of the guys they want to bring in," he told ESPN FC.

"Timber, in my opinion, he's a very gifted young player, he's always comfortable on the ball, he's a good defender but most of all he anticipates really well.

"Those kinds of players you need to bring in to Man Utd to get to a higher level. I know for England they're not common or well-known names but you need to start playing football again.

"I have seen many matches of Man United and it was lacking pace. There were too many players satisfied playing for Man United and not eager to win, not eager to play for the club."
