Manchester United 'edge closer' to first signing

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on their first 2022/23 signing under new manager Erik ten Hag.

United are one of just two sides in the Premier League "big six", along with Chelsea, that are yet to welcome any new arrivals in this transfer window.

Reports suggest the Manchester club has, however, been active in the market pursuing players, including FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong and Ajax Amsterdam defender Jurrien Timber, for several weeks now.

While negotiations regarding those two footballers are believed to still be ongoing, it has now been claimed by The Sun that the Red Devils are edging closer to making another Ajax star, Antony, their first recruit of the window.

It is reported that United's representatives have now flown out to the Netherlands to complete the deal, and are willing to spend £40 million (R785 million) for the winger.

Per Dutch outlet Voetbal International, though, that figure may not be enough, with the Eredivisie giants said to only be willing to sell the 22-year-old for a much higher amount.

The potential fee for the Brazilian winger is also said to be dependent on Sebastien Haller's mooted transfer to Borussia Dortmund, with Ajax said to want a premium price for one of their stars as they have already lost Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch to Bayern Munich on free deals in this window.
